Lisa Milroy was born in 1959 in Vancouver, Canada, and moved to London to study at St Martin's School of Art and Goldsmith's College of Art.  She lives and works in London.

Milroy was shortlisted for the Jerwood painting prize in 2001 and was awarded the Hugh Cassen drawing prize in 2004. Elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2006, she has travelled extensively in connection with her work, including undertaking residencies in Beijing, Taiwan and Japan, the influence of which can be seen clearly in much of her work.

Milroy is Head of Graduate Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art. In 2001 her work was the subject of a major survey at Tate Liverpool and in 2007 she was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham.
