Paul Schütze was born in 1958 in Melbourne, Australia, where he studied Fine Art at the Caulfield Institute of Technology. Aside from the visual arts, Schütze has written over twenty film scores including his award winning score for The Tale of Ruby Rose.
Schütze's practice is multi-disciplinary and involves film, photography, and installation. The exploration of specific locations and ambience through photography follows Schütze's parallel and interconnected work as a musician and sound artist. He has made many site-specific sound pieces including those with the land artist, James Turrell, and, most recently, Josiah McElheny.
Photographs of public spaces devoid of any human presence; semi-derelict swimming baths, museums after dark, and dramatic landscapes created my means of micro- - of frozen milk, ink and water; these constitute Schütze's natural artistic habitat.
Schütze has travelled extensively in connection with his work, including two residencies at the Cité des Arts International in Paris.
